Classics Curriculum

Vision

Classics is the study of ancient Greece and Rome, the societies they interacted with and their continued impact on the world. It is a wide-ranging and interdisciplinary subject, involving the study of literature, art and archaeology, philosophy and history – in fact, any field of study to do with the Classical world!

For Classical Civilisation A Level, you don’t need to know any languages, all the texts are in translation, and it doesn’t matter if you haven’t studied the Greeks and Romans since primary school; all you need is an interest in the ancient world and its cultures. From women in the ancient world, to the study of religious beliefs and ancient acts of intolerance, Classical Civilisation involves interesting discussions that are directly relevant to today’s world.

Classical Civilisation develops students’ ability to form opinions on complex issues, communicate them clearly in writing and make comparisons and connections across topics and time periods. It allows students to gain a unique perspective on the world, both past and present. This places them in a strong position for a range of degree courses including Classics, History, Literature, Philosophy and Law.
